Timber yard

Following on from last weeks article on Timber grades.

Todays article will focus on joinery grade timber sold in the majority of wood merchants, So What is joinery timber ?

To put it in easily understandable terms joinery timber is classed as a timber that is suitable for Internal jobs these can range from Furniture making, Skirting boarding to shelving to Stairs, basically any application that requires timber to be installed internally to a stable high class finish.

The most common joinery grade timber used in the Uk is a softwood referred to as European Redwood or Scots pine, this wood is imported from Scandinavian or the Baltic states and is native to  countries such as Finland, Sweden and Russia.

Unsorted Redwood Timber

Unsorted or best redwood as it is sometimes referred too is used in high quality joinery work where a defect free finish is required, this wood is generally referred to as free from defects, Unsorted timber will still contain knots and minimal shakes especially in thicker boards. As a rule you will find that this is the highest grade of softwood on offer in the majority of local timber merchants.

5th Scandinavian Redwood Timber

A fifth grade is also available this is by far the most common grade, you will find the majority of household products such as Pine Skirting board, Pine stair parts and Door linings will be manufactured using fifth grade Scandinavian redwood.

Uk Timber

6th Grade Redwood

6th grade redwood is a joinery timber it doesn’t tend to be so popular and it can contain larger dead knots widely used for price sensitive economy grade jobs.

Kiln Dried joinery grade Hardwood Timber

Another species of wood that has gained in popularity over the past 10 years is Oak timber. There are two species of Oak these are European and American White Oak. So what are the main differences between European & American white Oak ?

  • The obvious difference is that European Oak is native to America whereas American Oak is native to Europe.
  • European Oak will have tighter grain and growth rings.
  • European Oak will be lighter in colour and have a wider tone variation from plank to plank.
  • European Oak will have more of a wavy grain pattern where as American Oak is a lot more uniformed in its appearance
  • European Oak is more stable.
  • European Oak will last longer when used externally.

When using timber it is always worth giving a local timber merchant or builders merchant a call to advise on the most suitable timber for the task at hand always ask information on sourcing and quality as this will reduce the risk of problems in the future.

Timber is available in a wide range of different species and grades and can be used in all sorts of building and maintenance applications, however it is important to make sure that you use the correct timber for the specified job. In this article I have compiled a list of our most popular grades of softwood timber along with the most common uses.

The Wood that we have focused on in todays article is referred to as carcassing timber this is available either graded or ungraded and can be used in structural applications ranging from roof battons to floor joists to studwork to partitioned walls .

What is timber grading

Timber grading is an assessment that is made of the structural strength and integrity of the timber. Key criteria when assessing grades of wood are splits, knot size and overall frequency of knots.

Graded Softwood

“Graded “ this means that the timber has usually been kiln dried to improve overall stability, it will also have been selected using the grading process either manually ( By human eye ) or on a production line as is commonly the case these days. Graded timber can be used for any job where structural integrity is important. EG House building, Decking, shop fitting etc. There are two types of graded Softwood.

C16 Softwood

pressure treated timbertimber wood

C16 softwood timber allows for defects that may reduce the strength of the wood, areas focused on are grain changes as well as wane ( Bark ) you will also tend to see a lot more blue sap stains. This is by far the most commonly used timber in the UK and is also a very cost effective option.

C24 Graded timber

timber prices

C24 timber has fewer inconsistencies and defects than C16 timber the wooden boards will look a lot more uniform in appearance. C24 timber will generally be used for specific jobs usually architect lead. C24 timbers are generally reserved for projects such as balconies bridges and other applications where a wider rafter centre is required. C24 timber is often specified by architect lead jobs as this will cover them for all eventualities.

Ungraded pine Softwood Timber

Ungraded wood is generally the lowest grade it is the most favourably priced timber option and is readily available. Ungraded softwood can be sold pressure treated or untreated and is commonly used in fencing garden maintenance and general low load bearing applications. This grade of timber isn’t kiln dried and can therefore be prone to movement whilst the drying process is occurring.

Always secure ungraded timber or it will move

If you are thinking of using ungraded timber secure it in situ and try not to leave it lying around without fixing it as otherwise it will be prone to warping and splitting.

In the next article i will discuss the Joinery or furniture grade Redwood & Oak timber options that are available.

Feather Edged Fencing Vs Standard Fence panels

Feather Edged Fencing Design

With the end of winter approaching we are beginning to see customers starting to think about jobs in the garden that need doing. The weather at the start of 2018 has been pretty unpleasant with high winds and torrential rain which has lead to a number of garden fence panels coming down.

We are continually being asked for cost effective stronger alternatives to your standard budget fence panels. It is true if you decide to purchase wooden waney fence panels then you are likely to be replacing them within 5-6 years.

So what is the most cost effective durable option to replace old wooden fencing panels

The advice that I tend to give to customers is only purchase standard fence panels if you have to, if you do decide that this is the way to go then here are a few pointers –

  • Check that the panels have a minimum of five battons either side. ( For added strength )
  • Make sure that the fence panels are treated / tantalised.
  • Make sure that the fence panels have a weathered top ( Triangular ).
  • Make sure that the panels have sufficient fixings.

When fitting garden Fence Panels

  • Use fencing clips
  • Preserve Panels regularly with an oil based treatment.
  • Keep them up of the floor by roughly 10-20mm.
  • Secure Posts firmly in the ground roughly 600mm to ensure no movement.

Remember standard wooden fence panels will not last longer than 10 years.

So what is the best alternative wooden fencing system and does it look nice

When asked this question I will always try to guide customers in the right direction and I would advise them to have a look at installing a Feather edge fence system. If installed without out much planning they can look a bit industrial however fitted correctly I think aesthetically they are on par if not nicer than a traditional wooden fence. Here are a few examples of feather edge fencing that our customers have erected ( See below ).

Feather Edge fencingFence Panels

Fence boardPicket Fence

Feather edged fencing is produced using the individual pieces of timber rather that buying a prefabricated panel it is installed on site in situ and can be designed to meet the individual garden dimensions.

How cost effective is feather edge fencing

The cost of the materials used to produce a featheredge fence is similar to that of purchasing your panels. The only inconvenience with featheredge fencing is the labour that goes into attaching the individual boards to the timber cross rails this is due to the way that it is constructed. Long term the advantages in the lifespan will far outweigh that of a Standard panel.

So to put it in a nut shell feather edge is the way to go if you are looking for a cheap strong alternative to wooden fence panels.
